Goodbye to my first 100 pounds. I am very very pleased. ![]()
Now I just want to repeat the same thing again to lose another 100 pounds.
To follow up on my post from yesterday. I did some research on-line yesterday about perimenopause symptoms and both medical and non-medical treatments. Reminded me of all the reasons I dislike the medical industry. I’m not overjoyed with the natural product/supplement industry either. Anyway, I’ve decided to start with I’m going to try some Yogi herbal teas and I’m going to buy one of those FHS tests kits.
Estroven puts out a FHS test so you can check your hormone levels at home. It’s similar to a pregnancy test but it’s supposed to tell you if you are perimenopausal. Looks like you need to do it at the start of your cycle, provided your cycles are still somewhat regular, so that’s about a month down the road for me. If the test shows I don’t have hormone issues then at least I’ll know to start looking for solutions in another direction.
I know tea isn’t considered 100% raw but tea just seems so much safer and milder then medications or even supplements to me so I think that’s where I’m going to start. I ordered 4 kinds of Yogi Tea, a brand of tea that I’ve really enjoyed in the past. I got Woman’s Moon Time, Woman’s Raspberry Leaf, Women’s Dong Quai Tonic, and St John’s Wort. I’ve actually gotten relief from depression from St. John’s Wort pills in the past, so I thought St John’s Wort Tea wouldn’t hurt. It kind of skews my experiment a bit, but this seems like one of the mildest steps I could take, short of doing nothing at all which has been my strategy up till now.
If things don’t ease up on their own or with the help of some herbal tea, then I’m still open to the possibility of trying some stronger supplements like Chaste berry, Black Co hash, Dong Quai, and possibly vitamin/mineral supplements. And then if I’m still not getting relief, I may eventually look to prescription drugs, but that would be a number of months down the road.
So aside from wild mood swings things are going well. We’ve got the septic service folks coming out on this cool and foggy day to give us the bad news on the drain field. We’re also looking to meet up with a handy man to get some estimates on some work around the place to spiffy things up a bit. We picked up some laminate at Costco to do the kitchen floor because the linoleum had some tears in it. We also want to see if he can do some of the other more labor intensive stuff like painting our ceilings, etc.
On the real estate front, we found some houses in our town in the price range we thought our house was worth and we did a little driving tour yesterday. It was very educational. There is a lot of neglected vacation property down here so this isn’t as shocking as it sounds but we saw houses with ‘For Sale’ signs out front that had broken windows, partially missing garage doors, and curtains half hanging half falling in the windows. Just pitiful. Our house looks way better then that and we’ve haven’t even gotten started on our long list of ways we wanted to do to spiffy it up before we put it on the market. It’s looking good in terms of resale potential. We may walk away with more then we anticipated.
Along those same lines, we had two things happen after we got back from our tour that we decided to take as signs that we were on the right track. First of all, Mary got a phone call on her cell phone that she’s only had a few months and the guy said he was calling about the property that was for sale. She told him that he had a wrong number because we don’t have any property for sale but we thought it was quite a coincidence. Then not an hour later we got a knock on the door and someone inquired about the empty lot next door wanting to contact the owners to see if they would be interested in selling even though the lot is not up for sale. This has never happened before and with the timing we thought it was quite extraordinary.
One more thing I wanted to mention. I think I’m done with the Grocery Receipt entries on my blog. I’m glad I did it as it really helped me to examine prices in a way I hadn’t done before but I’m starting to find recording groceries to be tedious so I’m going to drop it. I may occasionally mention prices in the future but I’m not going to bother recording every receipt.
Well, that’s enough for today. Until tomorrow, I’ll leave you with the usual.

Hi Valerie,
I think teas are a great place to start. I keep wondering if maybe your mood swings could be realated to detoxifying. Since toxins are stored in fat and you've lost 100 POUNDS of it in the last 127 days (CONGRATULATIONS BTW!!!!!)
I keep thinking maybe you are just releasing the toxins so quickly that they are making you have all those oversensitivity issues and the moodiness as well.
Just a thought.
Your determination continues to inspire me.
=)

Hi Rachel,
Thanks for stopping by and for the congrats. The rapid weight loss may well be a contributing factor to my symptoms although it’s hard to determine exactly how. Could be some kind of detox, chemicals stored in fat cells being released into my blood, or cooked food withdrawal, or changing in estrogen levels due to the rapid weight loss. Hard to tell. Talk to you soon.

WAY TO GO VALERIE!!

Valerie - I feel very lucky to be able to see you pass a threshold into another room :) Next 100 coming up! The ability to journal and share is a very important thing and I have found for me that it gives me a really important focus that I lacked before. Your site is very special to me and I will visit a few times a day and go back and read older posts because I need a influx of info and support. You may not think that it matters that you do it, but it does :) Sending you extra smiles and good thoughts today - Great Job!
Congratulations Valerie!!! I am so happy for you! I just recently found your blog spot from your interview in Pear Magazine. You are truly an inspiration!
I myself am 330 pounds and am currently neither Raw nor Vegan but after having done some extensive research and being led by your example I am swiftly moving in that direction. I just finished VB's Green for Life and plan on ordering a Vitamix with my next paycheck.
Thank you for continuing to post your struggles and triumphs. I know you think it's becoming mundane but it gives me hope that I can do it...and I know I can't be the only one...so please don't stop!
I was so moved when you first were able to get down at the grocery store (I cried and cried while reading it) and now you're making even bigger strides. I too am looking forward to achieving some of the things that I am currently unable or unwilling to do because of my weight.
I pray for you constantly and wish you well on your continued journey. God bless you!

Valerie, First I want to heartily congratulate you on your 100 lbs gone! I have thought a lot about your nerves/sensitivity/emotional outburst issue, and I realized that every time I diet to lose weight (reduce calories to a point to lose weight) I have the same issues you are experiencing. I have read books where others describe the same thing. So I think it has something to do with low calories/losing weight. Maybe the chemical balance in your brain changes while reducing? I don't have any fix for it. And I know you are in the for the long haul. The only idea that strikes me is to vary the types of fruit you are using in your smoothies-maybe there are some minerals or something that you aren't getting. Also, I drink hot herbal teas often, even as a raw foodist. I believe they are medicinal, and add to my health. I hope you don't feel badly at all about them. They might help. Yeah! 100 lbs gone!

Congratulations!! And thank you for inspiring the rest of us. My fiance is a carnivore and I am more of a flexitarian, but we are having a banana each for breakfast and green smoothies for lunch. It is definitely helping us lose weight. Thank you so much!

Wow!!! Valerie that is so incredible in ONLY 127 DAYS too!!!!! Unreal!
Hi Valerie,
I once did a study on myself, like my body is my own personal laboratory, with reference to PMS. Anyway, the result was that taking a multivitamin everyday helped. Now, less formally, I have come to the conclusion that one of those huge B-Complex vitamins is very helpful with lifting a mood. It is great to hear I am not alone, today is a doozy for me. I keep not taking vitamins for some reason for the past year or so it has been a hard habit to keep. I think I just keep wishing the mostly raw will give me all the same and it really doesn't. I think I am going to have to face that and get back on the vitamins! I have to admit though, today is such a nice kind of soft sadness, kind of quiet and right and wrong all at once. I really need somewhere I can just go cry it would feel so good afterwards! Like a cleansing. Why do we feel like we have to have an excuse to be sad?
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Really!
Valerie,
Super SUPER Congratulaions on your major milestone of losing 100lbs!!
My prayers continue to be with you as you find relief from your symptoms, prepare your home for sale, and find a new place. You are on amazing woman.
Angel
Congrats! 100lbs - that's so awesome!
For the perimenipausal symptoms, have you considered wild yam cream?

Hi, Valerie!
You keep on keepin' on, Girl!! As a woman 10 years your senior, the only thing I can recommend is to perhaps up the ante on your flaxseed consumption - I've been taking freshly ground flaxseed in juice or smoothies for quite a few years and have found that I have more menopausal symptoms when I forget to take it, or cut down on how much I take (I'm up to 1/4 cup per day). It might complicate your smoothie consumption unless you add it RIGHT before your drink it (it DOES get really thick over time!) but it's made such a positive difference for my emotional state AND hot flashes, I never want to be without it! Plus, it DOES help in the "regularity" dept.! :-)
Love,
Marilyn
holy cow! Congratulations, Valerie! that's fantastic. And I hope you find something that helps out with the mood swings.
Best wishes,
Robbie

Hi Valerie
I've been anxiously waiting for you to hit the 100 mark. This is so exciting, i wish we could all have a green smoothie party to celebrate.!!!! You know you are becoming famous in the blogworld.
About the mood swings, I've just started taking Omega 3 pills and they have really helped with my memopause symptoms. In addition, i also take satiete, an herbal and viamin supplement. Both dramatically helped. If you want more info where to buy them, let me know and i will email you.

Hooray Valerie! I'm toasting you with my green smoothie this morning. I'm so very moved and inspired by your open and honest example as you've shared your journey on this blog. Congrats on this accomplishment and keep on keeping on.
HUGEST congratulations on your first 100lbs Valerie!!! I suspect there are many of us lurkers out there who read your blog faithfully and continue to be amazed by your staying power. As a fellow greensmootharian (and trained nutritionist) I do want to mention that a little more fat (raw coconut oil, flax oil, hemp seeds etc.) in your smoothies might help a lot with the hormonal ups and downs. DHA-rich algae might also be useful.
Way to go Ms. V!
hello valerie,
wow. congratulations on a great accomplishment.
wonderful, wonderful.
you have been amazing posting all your journey.
be well,
jessica
Congratulations!! You deserve to be oh so very proud of yourself.
As a fellow raw vegan who has already gone through the perimenopausal stage without supplements or herbals, I want to share that the key to hormonal balance is exercise. Even just walking out the door, walking for 7.5 minutes then turning around and coming back home can make a HUGE difference. The lymph gets moving by the natural movement of arms which affects other hormones -- I can't say enough how this can ameliorate so many of the symptoms. If a 15 minute walk is still a distant goal, just walking down a hall and back is a great start. Whatever makes you sweat.
Hope my experience and research helps.
Again -- most hearty and heartfelt congratulations on your achievement!
Raw raw raw!
Dear Valerie,
I am so happy for you.
At the risk of repeating what other have shared, I am truly inspired by your determination. I too am raw, overweight and living off of live foods to improve my health and lose weight. I drank green smoothies every morning until recently. My hunger has really taken a nose dive. I read your website faithfully every day and enjoy your comments, links and all the care you put into what you do. I have also watched your videos. As an overweight person, I hate being filmed or photographed so I was really inspired by your wilingness. Thank you for being here. By journalling on a blog, you help us all.
Love,
Dea.
WOW! I am amazed with you girl! That is way cool about your hair. Green smoothies ARE miracle drinks - aren't they? I keep telling folks.
WOOHOO! You rock Valerie!
Keep up all the great work!
