Look At Her Go!

Well, I made my second trip into a grocery store yesterday. The first trip, last week, was into a small local grocery. This time I went into a very large grocery store across the river with a huge produce section. It was about five times as much walking as the last time. The produce was so beautiful. I had a limited amount of time because my back was cramping up so I had to leave and go back to the car and let Mary finish picking out the produce and pay for it. Still, it’s been years since I was in a really great produce section and I really enjoyed it. Mary was also very happy for me.

But wait, there’s more! Coming in from the garage/car I don’t usually carry a lot. Maybe a bottle of water. I’m very worried about falling and the three steps into the house are difficult for me to manage. So Mary usually brings groceries in and I sit in my office chair in the kitchen and put everything away. Well, yesterday, I brought in over half the groceries myself. I’m feeling much more stable and steady and balanced and the stairs are much less challenging so I wanted to see if I could do it. I made three trips in and out again. I am feeling very pleased with myself at the moment.

I’ve had a couple of people ask me if I plan to do anything to celebrate losing 100 pounds. I’ve been thinking about it and really can’t come up with anything. I pretty much already have everything I need or want (that I can afford anyway…fantasizing about big screen TV’s). I hate to invest in new clothes that I won’t be able to wear long. Going out and about is actually stressful for me. I don’t think I’ll be marking the 100 pound milestone or future miles stones like this in any particular way. Rather, I’m going to focus on taking back my life and doing more and more things like grocery shopping that I haven’t been able to do. I think the next big thing for me will be driving. Then some short road trips, then longer road trips. Garden tours, visiting museums, going to U-Pick Farms, getting on an airplane which is difficult when you are large. And let’s not forget the chores I’ll be able to help out with. Cleaning gutters, mowing, spot cleaning the carpet. I’m sure I’ll get over the joy of doing those things real quick but initially I expect I will be very happy to be able to use my body in ways that are currently not feasible.

So a lot of this produce is actually for Mary, but whatever she doesn’t get to I’ll throw into a smoothie so I’m going to go ahead and list all the produce that we bought.

Grocery Receipt

Costco
5 lb Black Grapes $6.99
64 oz Strawberries $5.49
10 avocados $13.58
3 lbs Earthbound Farms Organic Mixed Baby Greens $11.37

Safeway
.83 lb Black Plums @ $2.69/lb = $2.23
1.14 lb Large Nectarines @ $1.99/lb = $2.27
3.59 lbs Organic Bananas @ $.79/lb = $2.85
4 Organic Lemons @ $.99/each = $3.96
2.89 lb Organic Yellow Onions @ $1.19/lb = $3.44
1.15 lb Organic Tomatoes @ $1.50/lb = $1.73
2, 8 oz packages of peeled garlic @ $2.49/each = $4.98

This was my first time to buy peeled garlic. It’s not organic but I was attracted to the convenience of it. I don’t love peeling garlic.

We’re thinking of doing a big garage sale Labor Day weekend in preparation for the upcoming move next year. So today will likely be about starting our preparations for the sale. Until tomorrow, I’ll leave you with the usual.

Hi Valerie!

I've truly enjoyed reading your blog and because of your success, have decided to make 1 green smoothie every day for myself. It really is helping with my chocolate cravings!

Here's a VERY EASY way to peel garlic: use a large knife and SMASH it. The skin will come off quickly and easily.

Keep up the great work!

Valerie, I am really touched by your sharing about the mundane issues of being overweight. I have been reading almost since you began and I think you are some king of raw food rock star! I applaud your progress. I am an overeater (surprise) and I am fascinated by your experiment. And also, I live in Washington and am (somehow) comforted that you live here, too. So, I will be a little sad when you move. However, go somewhere warm and lovely with your seeming saintly partner and little dog. That little tingle you feel...? That's me thinking your'e cool.
Peace out- Alla

Congratulations on all the wonderful progress you've made Valerie. I enjoy your blog - it so thoughtful and intelligient. I'm always drawn in. I got a little behind in my reading :P but I saw that you have an interest in possibly relocating to Austin. Everything posted is true - and the heat is as bad as they say. I'm a native Texas so I manage just fine. However, it's a great place to live. I've never felt so at home in my life. Real estate is ridiculous right now - but maybe it'll come down by the time you move - maybe. It's just a big small town in my eyes and I find it quite charming, accepting of diversity, and right on target for the raw food movement. I'm not sure what income bracket you're in but I do know that occasionally people shake their fists enough about over-priced real estate and the gentrification of neighborhoods that deals get cut on new houses. Just wanted to say, keep an eye out on Austin:)

Awesome! Pretty soon you'll be dancing around like a Ballerina! =)
Surely you could get yourself a small token to congratulate yourself for losing 100 pounds! It just seems so......... SIGNIFICANT!
Maybe a pretty scarf - that'll fit you even after you lose 100, 200, or more...
=)

Hi everyone,
Thanks for stopping by my blog and taking a few moments to write me a comment. Good tips on peeling garlic and more info on Austin. You folks are great!

Alla,
It’s nice to meet you. “Saintly partner” will make Mary smile. She may have some work to do before becoming a saint but she is definitely the best thing that ever happened to me and my favorite person on the planet. I’m not moving for months and months so until then we can be fellow Washingtonians. (Smile)

Have a wonderful day.

Great blog! Just thought I'd mention something about the garlic. If you buy organic, you don't need to bother peeling it. You can remove the loose very outer papery stuff and just chuck the garlic and peel in the blender with everything else.

I've been doing that with strawberries, not bothering to remove the tops. At first I did it with only organic, but this morning I had some conventional strawberries, and was too lazy to hull the tops, so I just threw them in the blender whole (after rinsing, that is).
