Another day in Green Smoothie Land. I hope you all are having a wonderful day. My world seems to be all about radical change and movement and upheaval. That’s good right? You know, there’s a new psychic in Long Beach and I’m thinking about going to see her. I’ve never had a reading and I thought it might be interesting. We’ll see.
In our quest to lighten up, Mary sold a day bed and my exercise bike yesterday and she was even trying to sell the house to one of my neighbors who owns several houses on the block that he rents out. I doubt he’ll be able to raise the money but I would love to sell it without even putting it on the market.
We bought $120. worth of laminate wood flooring from Costco for our small 6’x7’ kitchen floor. We had hoped to get a local handyman to put it down but he’s so busy he can’t even get over here to give us an estimate until mid August so we’re going to attempt to put it down ourselves. It’s one of those snap together jobs. I can’t get down onto the floor but I can provide all kinds of support for Mary. We figure if we completely mess it up we’re only out $120. bucks. But then we got to thinking that the kitchen walls and ceiling need to be painted and we don’t want to take a chance of dripping paint on the new floor so we’re going to try to paint today and tomorrow and then do the floor after that. I can help a lot more with painting. With an extended handle roller brush I can paint about 80% of the walls and ceiling sitting in an office chair and Mary can paint/cut in the stuff near the floor and ceiling corners. After the day bed is picked up we’re going to switch our bedroom furniture to the guest room which was painted last year and then we can paint the second bedroom. We still want to try to hire someone to spray paint the popcorn ceilings in the living rooms and bedrooms but it is so hard to find professional trades people in our little resort beach community we may have to either do it ourselves or leave it for the new owners to cope with.
We’re sliding the fridge into the living room to paint the wall behind the fridge and it will probably stay there for a few days. I’m going to make up six quarts of greens smoothies for me and 4 pints for Mary today so I won’t need to make smoothies in the kitchen tomorrow with all the painting and floor stuff going on.
I have learned more about septic systems this week then I ever cared to know. Far more like outhouses then I ever cared to imagine. We’ve had to put in for a county permit to repair our drain field and it looks like we’ll be at the mercy of the county regarding the cost of repairs. Gravity or forced pump, old tank or new, variance on the 10 foot building rule or taking out trees, will they require an engineered design, will it cost $4k or $8K? I’ve already got open holes in the back yard from the plumber/septic service guys taking a look at things and while the plumbing is currently working it looks like we’ll be taking the laundry to the laundry mat until this gets resolved.
So that’s what I’m thinking about today as I continue to live on green smoothies. I’ve taken to drinking my green smoothies out of quart jars rather then the plastic mugs that I wrote about early on in my blog. The cups were getting pretty scratched & beaten up and I had considered replacing them but I don’t love the idea of buying plastic so I thought I’d try the quart jar thing and I’m liking it so that’s what I’ll be using for a while. To follow up on a prior post, in recent days we tried watching the pilot for both “Entourage” and “Deadwood” via Netflix. Didn’t care for either one. So next we’re going to try “Curb your Enthusiasm” and “Arrested Development”. Until tomorrow, I’ll leave you with the usual.

curb your enthusiasm is one of my favorites. it's very dry, witty, and goofy all at the same time. i hope you like it. why did you sell your bike?

Hi Cheryl,
I’m looking forward to checking out the show. About the bike, in the coming months we’re planning to sell or give away almost everything we own in preparation for a cross country move. We’ve been looking for ways to unload various things. I think Mary is working a deal to give a friend a rifle in trade for hauling off some stuff to the dump for us. We’re planning garage sales over three weekends in the next couple of months and then I’m going to give away leftovers via Freecycle and we’ll haul off anything not taken to the dump. Looks like we’re shooting for mid September to put the house on the market. Even if it sells right away we should have very little left to pack or get rid of and we can just load up the car and take off. More and more it’s looking like we’re going to Bloomington but it’s not yet set in stone.

My kids (23 and 18) persuaded me to watch Arrested Development. It was habit forming. They bought the entire series and it is our entertainment on Saturday evening.
I love purging all the old stuff out of my life. Upheaval can be a good thing! Keep up the blog - I do enjoy reading it. You have a gift there - maybe you can turn your adventures into a novel!!

I love Arrested Development! I had never really gotten into it while it was on, but my brother harassed me until I rented it. It does take a little bit to warm up--the second and third seasons are really where it hits its stride. But if I recall correctly, I was still pretty hooked by the end of the first disk of season one.
Curb Your Enthusiasm is on my queue, too.
Wow, I didn't realize you guys were getting ready to move so soon!
At the risk of sounding like a DVD junkie... I love Aressted Developement and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Both Hillarious.
Another series you might want to chech out if you haven'r yet is "6 Feet Under"
You'll never want it to end!!!
Good luck with downsizing!
Rachel
Hi Val!
CONGRATULATIONS on the 100lbs! WOW! Great Job! You are such an inspiration...
Much Love and Many Blessings-
Wow, busy, busy, busy! Remember to ventilate well when you're painting, & even wear one of those little masks if you can, that stuff's NOT good for yer lungs!
Boy, when you make a decision, you just jump right in! I never realized either that you were moving so soon!
Hope the county doesn't bilk ya too bad! Wow, sounds like you guys have a LOT goin' on! I hope you do find a buyer without having to advertize! Tell EVERYONE you know...there's likely free local websites for listing, too, there seems to be everywhere!
You seem to have cut down the amount & frequency of rolaids lately, that's good!
& by the way, your heat wave would be welcome here, it was almost 40 here today!

Hi Valerie,
You have probably already thought of this:
It isn't too much trouble to create a site (you could use a free blog) to advertise the house. Via youtube you can put a video of the house on there. Then if you end up paying to get on the MLS or some for sale by owner site, you can put a link on that site to yours. The FSBO sites I have seen didn't allow many photos without paying extra. If you go that route you might decide it is worth it to use one that gets you on the MLS. We have sold via FSBO routes a few times.
With enough photos, videos people will buy site unseen from across the country.
Hi Karen,
Thanks for stopping by. I think down the road a piece I might like to take some writing classes and/or join a writing group to see if I can’t develop my skills. I’m not sure I’m interesting in a traditionally published novel as you have to have some commercial appeal to get someone to pony up that kind of deal. If I travel down that path I’ll likely gravitate toward internet and/or self publishing so I can be as bizarre as I want.
Hi Jenny,
Boy, you guys are getting my hopes up on the Arrested Development series. Actually, we were initially thinking the move would be 9-18 months down the road but for whatever reason the wheels appear to moving quite a bit faster. It’s strange not having jobs or kids to be concerned we don’t really have any timetables other then whether. We’d prefer not to move in the dead of winter. Thanks for taking the time to jot me a note.
Rachel,
I adored ‘6 feet under’ but I could never get Mary to watch it with me as she found the premise to be a little morbid. Thanks for visiting my blog.
Queen b,
Thanks for the congrats. I’m very pleased with how things are going. Take care my friend.
Hi Anastazia,
It does look like things are moving quickly. Mary has already gotten suggestions from several people about who to list the property with. Such is life in a small town. Neighbor dude wants us to rent it out and let him manage the property for us. We’re like no thank you to that hassle. The whether here on the coast is very pleasant in the summer or winter compared to most of the planet. I hope you get a break in the heat soon. Take care.
I hope you all have a great day!

Hi Elizabeth,
Good info. It took me a moment to figure out what FSBO stood for. You’d think after working for the Feds for 15 years acronyms would be no problem for me. (Smile). I had thought selling without an agent would be too complicated for me to figure out but Mary just told me yesterday that the title company does all the complicated stuff so now I want to look into that some more. I was wondering why some properties have more photos then others and suspected it had something to do with cost. Things to investigate. Thanks for stopping by today.
